Common Housing Neglect Issues

Here are some common housing neglect issues people face and useful links (to external webpages) to help guide you on your rights and your landlords responsibilities.
1. Serious Repairs Not Done

Structural failure, roof leaks, broken windows, plumbing issues.
Law reference: Landlord must keep property safe and in good repair. See gov.uk guide on landlord and tenant responsibilities.

2. Unsafe or Unfit Conditions

Mould, damp, poor heating, pest infestations—anything affecting health.
Law reference: Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 ensures homes must be safe, healthy, and free from harm.

3. Dangerous Wiring, Gas, or Appliances

Lack of annual gas safety check, faulty electrics.
Law reference: Landlord must ensure safety of gas and electrical appliances, according to gov.uk private renting guidance.

4. Lack of Communication of Landlord Details

Not given landlord’s name or contact.
Law reference: Under Landlord & Tenant Act 1985, tenants have the legal right to receive this information.

5. Illegal Eviction or Harassment

Landlord changing locks, threatening behaviour, or evicting without court order.
Law reference: Protection from Eviction Act 1977 makes this a criminal offence.
